PS3 Phat Luck

Stories are popping up all over the place about a problem that renders many PS3 models obsolete today. Apparently, the problem stems from a hardware issue, with Phat PS3 models unable to rectify the non-existence of February 29th 2010. When you try and play a game or log on to PSN, affected users are greeted with the following message:

Registration of the trophy information could not be completed. The game will quit.

At this stage, it's not known if the problem will simply go away once the clock ticks over to the next day or if it's going to mean some kind of worldwide bricking apocalypse for PS3 owners. We're praying against the latter. It's also having a pretty large affect on the Australian (and we guess the world's) gaming media, with websites, reviewers and even TV shows that rely on PS3 footage unable to use their consoles.

For now, let us know if you are affected in the comments below and we'll hold our collective breaths for a simple solution in the coming hours.

I should probably start - mine is affected and I'm hoping that it is fixed soon. Not only do I have reviews due but I want to start my second playthrough of Heavy Rain.

Mine's survived, but I hear that the Slims are mostly uneffected.

It's God's way of telling you not to ruin Heavy Rain by playing it twice, Dylan

The bit where offline Ps3's are affected really gets to me. This is a big problem already, with potential to be a massive one.

I'm actually kind of glad that I replaced my fat with a slim the second time it broke, rather than paying for repairs again, and I'm guessing I'm not alone. It'll be interesting to hear what it's like on the retail side of things right now.

That said, I'm still kind of nervous about turning my console on

So, at least this is appropriately funny at the moment.

Quite honestly dude I think the PS3's online is a lot better than the 360s. I mean i'm not saying Sony have played all its cards right this generation but the PSN is a top quality service for... NOTHING. Personally I think its a rip off to pay $90 a year just to play online on XBL. I got a few months free trial, I played, and I hated. Its also nice to not be constantly abused by stupid 12yo american kids whenever you play online... the PSN is a lot more laid back lol

What happened to your phat ps3 for both the 1st & 2nd breakdowns? Mine's a japanese white PS3 which is more frustrating because I have no warranty and my laser died & had to pay $200 to get it fixed. If it dies again then I'll just have to buy a slim & then risk losing my save files when transferring the HDD over since I've never done a backup that didn't end up corrupting my save files even though I did it correctly

I didn't turn my PS3 on at all yesterday which is good but bad at the same time because I still don't have Heavy Rain to play

Mine's a Japanese 60GB machine, which is why I was willing to foot an obscene repair bill to get the blu-ray laser replaced. Not until a while after getting it back did I notice that the new laser would read only Blu-Ray discs. With the ability to read CD's and DVD's gone, the BC with my import Ps2 copy of NiGHTS into Dreams was rendered moot.

The fact that it, then, never returned to full functionality, kind of inspired me to just buy a new, Slim one when it yellow-lighted a short while ago.

Strangely, both deaths happened in the absolute dying moments the the games I was playing at the time. Still need to pry my copy of MGS4 free from the thing.
