Mass Effect: Original Soundtrack
Composers
Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, Richard Jacques, David Kates
Let me confess, straight up, that Mass Effect didn’t really do anything for me. Certainly, the ambition was there, but the gameplay just didn’t come together in the way I had anticipated. It is largely because of my feelings towards the game that the soundtrack hasn’t warranted more than a couple of listens. Essentially, all the main music from the game is here.
The combination of lo-fi techno beats against the recording orchestra strikes a chord initially, but it starts to feel pretty repetitive and redundant if viewed separately from the game experience. I can recognise the album’s accomplishments, appreciate the arrangements and effective homage to sci-fi cinema, but it’s really a disc for Mass Effect fans. I don’t mean that as a cop-out though; it’s a genuine assessment and recommendation. If you’re a big fan of the game, this soundtrack will take you right back into your most epic battle, the most emotional and important scenes, and compliment your experience perfectly – possibly even psych you up to go on another of the game’s insane achievement runs. If you’re like me, however, and the game didn’t rock your world, it is decent background music but not essential.
