Funtime Friday: Grit
It’s a bit difficult to cry poor as a man writing about video games, when every now and again you get a delightful gift that absolutely grinds the gears of everybody else you tell.
This is my gift.
I’m talking about Battlefield 3, of course, which unlocked itself for Australian gamers yesterday.
Naturally, if you were the industrious sort of fellow, you could use a VPN to give yourself an IP from South Korea to play the game early. My housemate did this and spent most of Thursday in the multiplayer.
Such shenanigans aren’t required now. I’m playing on the PC, which is the platform you should be playing a Battlefield game on. Controllers are for noobs.
But rather than dive head-first into the multiplayer, I’ve decided to work my way through the campaign. I’ve only knocked over the first couple of missions to begin with, but good god – Frostbite 2 is a sexy, sexy engine.
Why haven’t you bought this game yet?
Go do it. Now.
But just in case you’re one of the strange individuals not excited to pick up Battlefield 3 this weekend, please satiate my curiosity – what on earth will you be doing this weekend instead?
I’m not really into war shooters, so I’ll be giving Dark Souls some quality time.
My copy of Battlefield is in the post, so I’ll be chipping away at Arkham City for the weekend. It’s a game that just seems to get bigger and bigger…
It does look very purdy, but the actual campaign is a big disappointment. I was hoping they might actually come out and do something to blow Modern Warfare away, but all they did was ape it. With the exception of three levels, it’s very yawntastic
That dirty lens effect annoys me, especially when you’re just looking through your eyes and not goggles.
It’s BF3 weekend for me, might even replay some singleplayer just for that sweet Super Hornet carrier launch sequence.
Are you getting bad connections, Matt? I can’t hardly connect to a game anymore, even after updating my Punkbuster (am I meant to start that up every time or something?). I really need to get a few more games under my belt for my review.
I get some occasional rubberbanding (very noticable when turning in a jet), but apart from when the whole server crashes I’m not having any connection problems. Even when playing with American mates on US servers the rubberbanding only gets a bit worse and I die while behind cover more often.
I don’t touch PB before starting the game. I haven’t had any PB issues since the beta, so I’m leaving it well enough alone lest I bugger it up somehow.
