Waddya Buyin’? Prams, milk powder and nappies

For those who’ve been regularly following the site, our posts and podcasts, you’d probably would have heard me talking about babies on several occasions. But I’ve never officially announced it with anyone aside from family and friends. Yes, I am expecting a baby to join the family, and the due date is rapidly approaching.

BebeCare Pram

I'm not even joking. This is actually the pram that I bought.

That’s not the sort of conversation that we typically have on Pixel Hunt. But it does have some significant bearing. It means that I have to be much more careful with my expenditure, and more critical about the games I’m buying. Money spent willfully on games is money taken away from milk powder, or the future college fund.

As one takes on more responsibilities, the free reign to spend on one’s own pleasures is slowly replaced. It’s not a bad thing, but it is quite a drastic transition. Ask those amongst our crew who’ve had babies or gotten married, and I’m sure they’ll say the same thing.

So in a way, I’m quite pleased with the movement toward the free-to-play model. Because I can continue to play games that I like, without putting pressure on my wallet. How I wish that Star Wars: The Old Republic would actually be FTP, but alas, those hopes were dashed.

But THIS is the one I hope the baby's gonna (eventually) ride in

But I can still satisfy those space-faring dreams just as soon as Star Trek: Infinite Space makes its way onto your nearest web browser. Set in the Deep Space 9 timeline, players will take their star-ships and boldly explore strange new planets, and blow s*** up. All arguments about the validity of a FTP browser game aside, there one key thing here that’s piquing my interest: The star-ship battles that’s reminiscent of the old Starfleet Command games. That’s a winner in my book.

The release dates for Infinite Space is yet to be confirmed, though many sources point towards a strong Q3 2011 possibility. So hopefully that means before the end of this week. In the mean time, check out the video below.
