An Aliens RPG died this week.
|
If you weren't already aware, there were a total of three video games based on the Alien/s films in development. But now there's only two.
This week, Obsidian Entertainment (makers of Neverwinter Nights and the upcoming awesome-looking Alpha Protocol) released an official statement ringing the deathknell for their Aliens role-playing game. And then publisher Sega (makers of uh, Sonic) echoed their sentiments. A few days later they released some concept art to show the world what exactly the game would have looked like. On the alien side of things anyway. I have to admit, as a huge fan of the Alien franchise, I can't really decide whether these are fascinating or dumb. Regardless, at least it ain't the newborn alien from Alien: Resurrection.
At least it's not the newborn from Alien: Resurrection. At least it's not the newborn from Alien: Resurrection. At least it's not the newborn from Alien: Resurrection.
As far as the other games are concerned, there's a new Alien Vs Predator game in the works. And of course, the long overdue Aliens: Colonial Marines is still occasionally popping up to say it still exists. No word yet on the state or release date of either of these games. But seeing as Colonial Marines is shaping up to be Rainbow Six Vegas but with Aliens - I AM SOLD.

I Love You, Banjo
|
So I ordered a copy of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts&Bolts from game.com.au for $19 the other week. I've been playing it for the last three days, and my feelings generally float around the 'why did no one tell me to buy this sooner' mark.
This is something of a unique purchase for me. Usually when I decide to buy a game, it's based on a myriad of reviews I've read, verdict aggregates and how much the title appeals to me.
This time, I based on purchase entirely on Pixel Hunt's coverage of the game. Steve's review from a few issues back and Michael's 'You May Have Missed' from the latest issue were the sole deciding factors in my purchase of this game, the only two things I needed to read to know that I wanted the game. Sure, it took me a while to actually order it (I'm cheap sometimes), but when I did these two pieces were the main reasons for my purchase.
So, readers - how often are you swayed by a single review you've read? Is one or two opinions ever enough for you? Have you, dare I ask, ever bought a game purely because Pixel Hunt told you to?

Blood Bowl Available Now
|

Ooh... Blood Bowl for the PC has just been released, and I'm very tempted to go get it. It's available as a download, for the price of €42.89.
I've never played the old Blood Bowl tabletop game, but it is a premise that I think I'd enjoy very much: Fantasy characters (elves, orcs) playing a brutal form of American-styled football. It has always been well-received, and there's still remains a loyal following.
This new PC iteration seems to offer the same type of experience. In fact, it seems to offer two kinds of experiences: A turn-based system, more akin to the original boardgame, and a real-time mode which would appeal to more twitch players.
Either way, it's only a small download (3gb) and it seems to be worth my while. I'm thinking that I'll need to rustle up a few players and get a league going.
Blood Bowl is available for download here.

Videogames on the list to be filtered
|
Hot news just off The Age and Kotaku. Apparently videogames will also be subjected to internet filtering. It is proposed that websites that host or sell games that do not qualify for a M15+ rating will be on the list of inappropriate material.
From the article on The Age: a spokesman for Senator Conroy confirmed that under the filtering plan, it will be extended to downloadable games, flash-based web games and sites which sell physical copies of games that do not meet the MA15+ standard.
We've already heard the arguments against internet censorship. And now it will directly affect videogames. It also calls into question the need for a R18+ rating for games in Australia, and a rating system that is commensurate with the rest of the developed world.

Tim Needs More Sleep
|
Freelance Writer, Pixelhunt Contributor and general angry little man, Tim, was earlier today caught posting a news story that had already appeared on the Pixel Hunt front page.
When caught and put through questioning, he kept on insisting that he had spent the last three days figuring out how to crop images in Photoshop, so as to allow for his so-called 'splendid' image of a chaved-up Lord of the Rings character / Imagine boxart mashup.
Exhibit A (also the only exhibit).

When asked exactly how such an image could in any way be related to the impending release of a PSP game, he shrugged and started eating a banana.
It is believed that he has been going slowly mad since his own PSP was stolen roughly a month ago, and has been living on a diet of Phoenix Wright on his commutes as a result of now only owning a DS.
He is believed to be dangerous, and is liable to talk about himself in the third person, because "that's how egotistical basketball players speak".
Pixelhunt would like to remind him that a knee operation at age fifteen cut his basketball days short a long time ago now. Also, he's a short, white Australian who can't jump. Also, Dylan kicked his arse at NBA Jam last week. Also, he supports those losers, the Orlando Magic, who can't even win in overtime.

What exactly is going on with Batman: Arkham Asylum?
|

It seems a little strange that everyone looks to have forgotten about this game all of a sudden. To the point where nobody seems to care that it is still suffering from delays and confusing release dates.
This title has the potential to be the Batman game everyone has been waiting for but in the last couple of months, it's completely dropped off the radar. Eidos still haven't stated an official Australian release date on their website or forums. They have confirmed that there will be a demo for the game though. Sometime in July apparently.
The first date thrown around for this game coming out was June. Then late June. Now the latest is September. Or maybe August. Or maybe it's already out. Who knows? Apparently nobody. And as a result, people have stopped caring.
Here's a few confusing tidbits regarding the release date for this game...
EB Games: 03/09/09
GAME 03/09/09
Gametraders: 1/06/09
IGN AU: 25/08/09
Eidos official date for North America (August 25) and for Europe (August 28).
Seriously, what the hell?
